Windows 8.1 is coming. Is it good? Worth it? Do you have to pay for it? Should you care?
The demand for this update has been huge with the biggest request being for bringing back the Start button. The Windows 8.1 release date is due June 26, 2013.
What do you need to do to prepare for it? Get Windows 8 if you don’t already have it.
Do you have to pay for it? Nope, it’s a free update as long as you have Windows 8.
The start button will be back, right? Sort of. It won’t look like the Start button in Windows 7, but it will act the same way in the lower-hand corner.
What’s new in Windows 8.1? 50/50 split screen apps, more robust searching, easily accessible PC Settings charm, new Internet Explorer 11, offline SkyDrive access, better syncing, new apps, new drivers, and a new Paint program.
Is Windows 8.1 good? I’m actually pretty excited about this especially due to the rollout of several different PC updates and features. It’s a must-have if you already have Windows 8.1.
If you have Windows 7 or older, you should not go to Windows 8 just for the 8.1 update. It’s not worth upgrading a Windows operating system for the Microsoft support folks. It allows for the Metro-style interface to stay around while implementing nice-to-have features to satisfy the naysayers’ complaints.
