Twitter, now a public company, is on the coat tails of Facebook, and if you haven’t tweeted, now is a good time as any to start.  Getting up to speed may feel daunting due to all the foreign hash tags and symbols.  But, I’m here to give you a quick Twitter 101 primer.

Here are the Twitter basics you should know:

  1. Set up an account.  That’s right, you can’t practice if you’re not in the game.  Okay, that doesn’t make sense in the real world, but you know what I mean.  Sign up to start!
  2. Follow people.  Search for athletes, celebrities, amazing computer repair companies in NYC, such as New York Computer Help!  Shameless plug, I know.
  3. Tweet away!  What does that mean?  It means you need to know the Twitter lingo.  Here is a quick vocabulary lesson:
  • RT – Retweet
  • via; h/t – hat tip or someone amending his tweet or crediting a previous tweet
  • # – allows others to search the topic easily, i.e. #SuperBowl
  • @ – your username or account handle starts with that.  You can tweet directly to a person by using @ first.
