The new iPhone is absolutely gorgeous. There’s no doubt about it. But, there’s nothing pretty about no signal strength. It’s been reported that many iPhone 4 users are complaining about low signal strength. Specifically, the iPhone only gets sub-par signal for phone reception and Internet browsing when holding the phone in certain ways. This results in dropped calls, slow Internet browsing, and choppy conversations. What’s even worse is that the iPhone’s signal indicator shows 2 more bars of strength when, in fact, it should be showing 2 less. So, if you hold your iPhone 4 in a certain way i.e. death grip, it will receive only 1 bar; yet, the indicator will falsely show 3 bars.
This lack of signal strength is definitely something unexpected by Apple. So unexpected that they blame this on inaccurate algorithms. To me, it looks like a cover-up. I think they launched the iPhone 4 too early and possibly knew of this. To cover it up, they decided to pad on 2 extra bars to the signal strength in the hopes of fooling iPhone users that their signal is okay. But, iPhone users are smart enough to know when their signal is weak, prompting lots of complaints. Apple probably figured they would correct this glitch in the next iPhone update unbeknownst to nieve Phone users. Apple has told the public that an update to correct this issue is in the works, and is estimated to be released in 3-4 weeks.
One work-around Apple has given consumers is to not grip the iPhone 4 on the lower-left corner, or just simply use a case. All the Apple hype to not be able to grip the iPhone normally? That’s just horrible. What’s worse is that the design might possibly be prohibiting signal strength, not a software glitch. The iPhone 4 now has the cellular and wi-fi antennas on the outside area of the case. When users grab this area, it could be compromising the signal. If that’s really the case, you can be looking at the biggest Applerecall in history. Whether an Apple update fixes this issue or not, the iPhone 4 looks to be the biggest launch flop in Apple’s history of iPhones. What’s worse is their possible cover-up of it. What kind of Apple support is that? I’d expect the Mac genuis crew to behave better than that.
If you want to ditch your iPhone 4 due to the reception issue, you can do so for free with 30 days of purchase. And Apple will forgo the $20 restocking fee for the 16GB phone or $30 restocking fee if you have the 32Gb phone.
