Gmail has long been known as the online e-mail to have.  You can have gigabytes of storage and can also share a calendar, contacts, and info with others.  Now, Gmail is coming out with with “Gears,” which allows users to also view their e-mails when they are not connecting to the Internet.  This is ideal for travelers or those who are not on the Internet all the time.  It is also a good way to save your e-mails as a backup to your computer.

How does it work?  All of your e-mails will not be downloaded to your computer or else Gmail’s servers will burst.  So, Gmail has implemented an algorithm such that it will determine which e-mails to download to users’ computers, and also download those e-mails flagged as important.  If you have Gmail, this offline email folder setup will not automatically be set up.  To enable this e-mail feature, you’ll need to switch it on within the Settings link.  Time will tell if this offline Gears e-mail setup is popular or worthwhile, considering that Outlook and Outlook Express have been enabling e-mail users to see their e-mails offline for years.
