If you’re unable to charge your laptop’s battery any more, it could either be the AC Adapter (the plug) that has gone bad or your laptop’s power jack, or DC jack, is no longer secure and cannot transmit power.  This is common for older laptops where the DC jack has taken lots of wear and tear over the years with inputting the power cable.  Although some jacks may be repaired, it makes good sense to just replace it since the replacement part is only $30 – $60, and you don’t want to have to open up and close the laptop to find out that the laptop repair didn’t work.

If you need to replace your power jack, here are the step to do so:

  1. Disassemble your laptop.  You may find disassembly instructions here for further assistance.
  2.  Locate the power jack where it connects to the motherboard.  There will be a circular piece of plastic near the hold of the DC adapter.
  3. Hold the power jack with tweezers or plyers and remove the bad jack.
  4. Take the new jack and solder it with a soldering iron into place.  Crazy glue is not the recommended application here.
  5. Reassemble the computer and start up it up to test if the computer repair worked.
