As of July 13, 2010, Microsoft will officially end its support for Windows XP SP2. What does this mean? If you are still running Windows XP SP2, Microsoft will no longer provide any more updates for Internet Explorer.
This results in a possible security threat getting into your computer as time goes on. How so? In a month or a couple months down the road, if some virus compromises the Windows XP SP2 Internet Explorer, Microsoft will not put out any updates or patches to resolve this vulnerability. Thus, there’s a chance you’ll be infected with a virus via Internet Explorer.
What should you do if you still are running Windows XP, version SP2?
- Check your computer to see what version you’re running. Right-click My Computer->Properties and see if you’re running Windows XP, SP1, SP2, or SP3
- If you’re running Windows XP SP1 or SP2, upgrade to Windows XP SP3
Once you upgrade or make sure you’re running Windows XP SP3, you’ll be safe since Microsoft is still supporting this version. With Microsoft support, you’ll still receive security updates to defend against Internet Explorer viruses.
