The new Kindle Fire HD is out, and strategically released a week before the new iPad announcement. Why not get a head start on the competition? But, is it a head-start you want to be part of? Should you buy one?
Let’s go right to the specs:
- Better Screen – The most noticeable improvement. You’ll see a much more vibrant screen than the old one with 1280 x 800 pixels vs. the old 1024 x 600 pixel screen. The new iPad still is twice as better at 2048 x 1536.
- Good Price – The new Kindle Fire HD 7-inch model is only $199 (the 8.9″ is $299) vs. the $499 new iPad. A no brainer for bookworms who also want to watch the occasional movie or video.
- Now in surround sound – 2 speakers are now on both sides, not just 1 side like the old one. This comes in handy for surround sound movies.
Should you buy the Kindle Fire HD? I wouldn’t personally and still recommend holding out for the iPad Mini that is supposed to be priced in the neighborhood of $250-300. That being said, if you are an avid book reader and already have the $79 Amazon Prime annual membership, this is a good option to have as your dedicated e-reader.
It also makes for a nice gift without having to worry about connecting it to a computer network or PC/Mac setup. If you have the old Kindle, the new high definition screen does make a big difference and is easier on the eyes. Thus, you should upgrade to this if you read a lot.
