I’m looking for input on this one. Our tech support crew is getting info that half of Americans think that Facebook is a passing fad according to a CNBC poll. Anyone remember MySpace?
If reality is a bit skewed, Mark Zuckerberg is looking to go to outer space with a $100 billion valuation of his Facebook IPO later this week. Is it really far off? I’m not a numbers guy, but let’s look at some figures. Over 40% of American adults are Facebook users. 900 million people in the world are also members. Facebook has amassed over $1 billion revenue in early 2012 alone.
That being said, about 45% of adults predict a short future for Facebook. Half of this are from non-technical support savvy baby boomer. I attributed this thought based on the IPO outlook since shareholders always hold higher expectations on a company going further. Although this will be Mark Zuckerberg’s company still, he will have co-owners and partners who will also dictate the tempo, goals, and future. I look at Mark as a unique leader of thought. Mixing that with others can turn future thoughts into mainstream media. Time will tell of course, but 22% of Americans feel like he’ll run this soon-to-be public company into the ground.
What do you think? Is Facebook a passing fad? I feel it will have a good 5-10 years and then the next Facebook will take over. That may be actually a kind future outlook based on how many computer support startups there are out there who are determined to be the next Facebook.
