You may have paid for hi-def (HD) from TimeWarner TV Cable, but you still might be getting true hi-def on your channels. To get hi-def, you have to get a special hi-def cable box from TimeWarner. Of course, you can get hi-def cable boxes from other providers, but I’m sticking with TimeWarner for this topic. The next step you must take in getting hi-def is to set your hi-def cable box for 1080i, the resolution used for hi-def programming. Don’t think this is already pre-configured. Many times, the cable boxes come only set at 480p or 480i which is half the resolution.
Here’s how to set up your TimeWarner cable box for hi-def:
- On your hi-def cable remote control, press Settings
- Arrow right until you reach Display and press the Display button
- Select Output Resolution
- Select 1081i as the choice to go with
Most hi-def cable boxes are set with Auto Select which isn’t awful, but sometimes display the lower resolution picture when it can support the higher one. Some boxes come preconfigured as only 480p or 480i which means you barely get the hi-def output you really want. Keep in mind that this hi-def configuration only affects the hi-def channels, such as 701 and up with TimeWarner, and it doesn’t affect the other non-hi-def channels.
The tech support configuration on this is easy, well, as long as you know how to work a remote control. Don’t assume you have the right resolution. TimeWarner does not take responsibility for your cable boxes. Ok, they’re supposed to, but expect you to read the 200-page manual instead.
