Planning a server migration can be stressful. You’ll have to make sure all your data is transferred; e-mails are going in and out; iPhones and Blackberries are functional; and all fo the calendars and contacts are where they’re supposed to be. A server migration is when you install a new server for a company, and transfer all of the data from the old server.
So, when’s a good time to perform a server migration? It is good planning to start installing the new server on Friday morning and then start configuration the macs and windows workstations in the afternoon. That way, the computer users will still be available for any last minute instructions. Then, the file migration process should begin Friday night to Saturday. Then, technical support should be available remotely Friday night to ensure the file migration process is going well. Finally, onsite computer support should assist Saturday for finalizing workstations and server configurations. It is also wise to have tech support onsite on Monday to follow up to snags, questions, and training.
It depends on the size of the company, but if it there are over 5-7 users, it is good rule of thumb to have 2 tech folks on-hand: one of the server setup and one for the workstation end. Make sure to have a good backup of your server and workstation files before you start the process.
