So, we recently had a client who used Microsoft Works 4.0 for all his word processing files. I know, it’s old. It’s actually from the Windows 95 stone age. But, being heavily used to this decade + program, our client now needed to access these files from a Windows XP computer. How was he to do this without having the old Word 4.0 program?
Here’s how to open a Works 4.0 file:
- Find the Microsoft Works 4.0 program! Okay, if you can’t get it, move onto number 2.
- Download and install the the Works 4 Converter.
- Install Microsoft Word, launch it, and go to File->Open.
- Select drop-down next to File of Type and choose: Works 4.0 for Windows (*.wps).
- Browse to your Works document and open it.
- Finally, go to File->Save As and choose Microsoft Word (.doc) file.
If the above way looks to difficult for you, here’s a quicker way:
- Download and install Abiword.
- You’ll be able to open your Works file.
- Remember to go to File->Save and save your file to .doc or .docx so it will convert to a Word file.
The formatting might be a little off after the conversion, but this will bring your Works file to the 21st century. The tech support is not difficult as long as you can follow the above 6 steps. In short, you should not still be on Works since it’s no longer supported and is lacking features found in Microsoft Word. Microsoft Word support is much easier to attain online anyway.
