Can you FaceTime over 3G?  Since FaceTime started, you could only use it if b0th people had WiFi on both ends.  You also needed an iPad, iPhone, or Mac from both sides.  But, you could never use it over 3G, 4G, or your cellular connection.  Now, you’ll be able to use FaceTime over 3G when the iOS 6 is released.  If and when you buy the iPhone 5, it will already have the new iPhone operating system version 6 on it.  That operating system will have the ability to make video chat calls, a.k.a. FaceTime, over 3G, not requiring a WiFi connection.

So, what are all the ways to make FaceTime calls over 3G? can we use facetime for android?

  1. You can jailbreak your current iPhone.  Then, you’ll be able to make free FaceTime calls over 3G.  Yes, this will void your Apple service warranty and may brick (really screw up your phone), but it will work.
  2. Upgrade your current iPhone 4 / 4S from iOS 5 to iOS 6 when it becomes available.
  3. Buy the new iPhone 5 which already has the iOS 6.

Some key points:

  • AT&T is already bracing itself for the heavy network service throughput by requiring a new Mobile Share plan to take part in FaceTime.  Essentially, you pay extra on each device you want to FaceTime with.  Definitely feeling taken advantage of here.  AT&T is certainly enjoying the Apple ride here.
  • Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile have not mentioned any data plan limitations as of yet.
  • A good alternative to FaceTime:  Google+ Hangouts.  You can use it over 3G as you don’t need WiFi to run it.  Any device may run it.  It is PC supported, Mac compatible, Android, and everything-else compatible.  You can talk up to 9 people at once on it.  Skype, Tango, and ooVoo are also strong alternatives.
