You’ve heard of the FedEx virus and other email viruses in the way of attachments. Welcome the new Better Business Bureau, or BBB virus! From my experience with email viruses, this one really looks legit. I really had to double-check this one to see if it was fake or real. I have already had a few customers inquire about whether this email is authentic.
What’s it look like? The subject reads: BBB notice RE: Case ID with a random 8-10 digit number. The email sending the email will be from alert@bbb.org, service@bbb.org, or another bbb.org email address.
The body of the email reads:
Here with the Better Business Bureau notifies you that we have been sent a complaint (ID #) from one of your customers related to their dealership with you.
Please open the COMPLAINT REPORT below to find the details….
It is signed off by a random name and titled Dispute Counselor, Better Business Bureau. This is then followed by a very real-looking signature which is actually the correct contact number to the Better Business Bureau! Somehow, this computer virus culprit has hacked inside the BBB computer network to use the correct domain name and contact information.
Who does this affect? Any business owner! If you own or manage a business, or have dealt with the BBB in the past, you may receive this email. Spam filters will potentially not catch this as spam due to the authenticity of the virus email. So, be on the look-out, do not click the COMPLAINT REPORT link in the email, and most importantly, delete the email.
